Lauren turned onto the long stretch of pavement before the airport with a choking cry. Two hours on the road, and wave after wave, tears racked her insides.
âOkay, so youâre all set,â the airline employee said. âI have you booked first class on the next flight.â She paused, adding, âAre you sure youâre alright?â
âYes,â Lauren responded, thanking her for her concern, knowing that she wasnât alright, that she might never be alright again. Between the fire and seeing Hunter after so many years, her world had been flipped on end, and she wasnât sure how to right a ship that was sinking. She glanced over, picked up her phone, and listened to her voicemail againâHey, uh, so I know youâre pissed. I just wanted to say that Iâm sorry that I said things the way I did. I didnât mean to be so harsh. Okay, so uh, thatâs it then. Bye, Lauren. It was good to see you again. When she paused mid-message, crying, knowing that they were both crying, made her feel less alone in the world. She loved her. They loved each other. But itâs not about love, she told herself, not for us anyway. Crossing the parking lot, she pulled herself together, and returned her car keys to the car rental agency.
âIt wonât be any problem,â the agent assured. âWeâll just turn the claim into the insurance company. You shouldnât have to pay any extra, but if you do, I have your number right here.â
âThank you,â Lauren responded, her mind sucking her back to her last moments with Hunter as she stepped away from the counter, her words harsh, painfully honest, and direct. Not her typical manner of communication, she thought, knowing that her timing and delivery resulted from emotional stress. She was right, you do think of yourself first. You always have. If sheâd heard her dad make the accusation once, sheâd heard him make it a thousand times, but what heâd thought hadnât mattered. Because what others thought, except for what Hunter thought, had never mattered. Thatâs because youâre arrogant, she told herself, boarding the airplane, and locating her seat. Hunter didnât say it, but you know she thinks it. And as if bent on torture, her mind replayed Hunterâs words again, piercing her heart with daggers, and clouding her vision with tears.
âCan I get you anything?â the flight attendant asked, touching her shoulder lightly.
âNo, but thank you,â Lauren answered, forcing a thin smile as she reached into her purse for a tissue. Two hours to home, she told herself, hearing the landing gear lift and lock, and resting her head against the window. Home, your place of residence for over twenty years, but definitely not where your heart is.
